Introduction:
FIGO’s new Pregnancy and NCD Committee host this postgraduate course which introduces and delves into the essential link between maternal health and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). With NCDs being the leading cause of mortality in the world – and rates increasing globally – the course will examine the role which health care professionals can take in preventing and managing noncommunicable diseases in pregnancy and beyond, as well as into the offspring and future generations. Initially focusing on exploring the key complications of hyperglycaemia in pregnancy (including gestational diabetes), preeclampsia and obesity, the course will also consider how maternal health fits within the wider NCD prevention agenda, as well as the links of NCDs to pregnancy complications such as preterm birth.

The course is aimed primarily at health care professionals, who we hope will leave with a new-found knowledge and understanding of their role in prevention and treatment of noncommunicable diseases and associated pregnancy complications, and how they can change their clinical practice in order to facilitate this. This course will also target policy-makers and decision-makers, who will learn the impact policy change in this area can have on addressing the NCD epidemic. Of particular note will be discussion around cost effectiveness studies which have been done in this area which show not just the health and social savings, but also the economic savings.
