“Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.”
The triennial FIGO Congress is the most important international academic event in our specialty. With a twenty-one congress legacy the FIGO congress programmes have a rich tradition of discussing practice trends, tracking advances and representing issues related to women’s health and rights.
The President and Executive Board of FIGO tasked the Scientific Committee with planning a Congress programme that is richly scientific and academic, while also being inclusive and representative of FIGO’s diversity and global presence. For FIGO 2018 we are privileged to have an exceptional team of committee members working to fulfil these expectations.
The congress programme is an amalgam of the tested FIGO format with new innovations. The Plenary Sessions are always the pride of FIGO congresses and the plenary speakers being invited to FIGO 2018 are exceptional inspiring individuals. The Core Programme will provide an overview of current practice as also innovations, with ten structured scientific tracks for delegates to choose from. The Supplementary Programme will showcase the work undertaken in the service of women’s health, by FIGO Committees, Working Groups and Member bodies as also partner organisations. With a special regard for our delegates from Latin America, there will be dedicated Scientific Sessions in Spanish and Portuguese throughout the Congress.
As always, the Congress will offer an opportunity for delegates to share their experiences by Oral Communications, Video Presentations and Poster Displays, with the best presentations being given a special platform at the Speaker’s Corner.
We have also planned sessions with a difference; Practice Perspectives – the presentation of rare and interesting cases partnered with IJGO, Master Clinicians – the discussion of difficult and perplexing cases by the masters, Meet the Professor – small group meetings with stalwarts to receive their wisdom, Failure Fair – an analysis of situational failures, To The Point Presentations – short talks on interesting and focused subjects and FIGO Young Champions – a platform for youth. We also have plans for a FIGO Movie Theatre to screen movies with women’s themes.
The Scientific Committee is also working closely with the Committee for Capacity Building to plan the Pre-Congress Workshops, organise the Live Surgical Sessions and conduct Simulation Labs for hands on training and experience.
In Rio de Janeiro, FIGO 2018 has one of the world’s most exotic congress venues, with Christ the Redeemer, a wonder of the world and a striking landscape, a world heritage site. The Scientific Committee is working to plan a programme to match this and we invite you to join us at the Riocentro to speak up for women, deliberate our challenges and our practices and celebrate our advances and achievements.
