PRE-CONGRESS WORKSHOP ON RESPONDING TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
FIGO 2018 XXII World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics
Concept Note and DRAFT Agenda
FIGO Working Group on Violence against Women/World Health Organization/UNFPA/JHPIEGO

Background:
This workshop is designed to raise awareness and provide practicing obstetricians and gynecologists with information and tools to address violence against women (VAW) in their respective health care settings. The focus will be on the two most common forms of VAW worldwide: domestic/intimate partner violence (IPV) and non-partner sexual violence. Despite 1 in 3 women in the world being affected by these two forms of violence, the response of health care providers to date has been inadequate. The workshop seeks to: a) increase the understanding of obstetrics and gynaecology practitioners on the epidemiology and health consequences of VAW and b) strengthen basic skills for the clinical response in order to improve the health and wellbeing of women experiencing VAW.

Proposed workshop format and content:
This 1-day workshop for OB/GYNs will provide an introduction to the health sector response to VAW. Based on previous experience training health care providers, including OB/GYNs, on the health sector response to VAW, it is evident that knowledge and skills need to be enhanced specifically on identification of survivors, communication with the survivor – first-line support, and documentation. The proposed workshop combines presentations and interactive activities. It will use presentations to increase knowledge and will use exercises to increase understanding of VAW survivors’ needs and how to overcome barriers in providing care. It will use role plays and clinical case analyses to increase skills in the response to survivors of VAW.

The workshop will cover the epidemiology of VAW; identification and first-line response; principles of clinical care, including history taking, physical examination and documentation for the purposes of identifying the medical and support needs of the survivor, and for legal proceedings should the survivor wish to pursue this. It will also provide an overview on post-rape care and a session on how to address VAW in different contexts, namely family planning, antenatal care and emergency settings.

To ensure practitioners’ concerns about the barriers in providing care are addressed, the participants will be asked at the beginning of the workshop to share their concerns/barriers to providing quality care to survivors of violence. These concerns will be addressed throughout and revisited in a specific session.

Each of the presentations and interactive sessions will include time for questions and answers to ensure full understanding.

Aim and Objectives:
The overall aim of the workshop is to raise awareness of obstetrics and gynaecology
practitioners on the health consequences of VAW and build basic skills to strengthen the
clinical response in order to improve the sexual and reproductive health of women.

Specifically, the objectives are:
1. To increase the understanding on VAW as a public health issue
– Prevalence (global and regional)
– Risk and protective factors
– Health consequences
– Role of heath sector in responding to VAW

2. To strengthen evidence-based clinical knowledge and skills on the response to
survivors of VAW
– Identification
– First-line support (LIVES)
– Taking history, physical examination and documentation
– Post-rape care
– Family planning, antenatal care and emergency settings

Objective 2 will be addressed using clinical case studies and role play exercises.

Assessment:
Participants will be asked to fill out an evaluation form at the end of the session.
